Finding the perfect pet-friendly rental may not always be easy, but with nearly half of all renters owning a dog or cat, pet owners are starting to find more and more welcome mats.
Plan Ahead: Moving-related issues are among the most common reasons pet owners are forced to give up their pets. In a recent American Humane Association survey, “moving” was the most common reason and “my landlord won’t allow pets” was the fourth most common reason by pet owners for relinquishing their pets. Pet owners are understandably heartbroken at the thought of giving up a family member, but it doesn’t have to be that way. With just a little planning, you can find the perfect pet-friendly place!
Know the Policy: Most landlords provide their pet policies up front but if an apartment’s pet friendliness is not immediately clear, it’s best to ask right away. Pet policies can vary from one rental community to another. Be sure to contact the rental office directly to get a clear understanding of their pet policy before signing the lease.
The benefits to the thousands of homeless pets who are euthanized each year for lack of a home cannot be overstated. After all, a house is not a home without a pet.
